Interview with Julian Bartrom

Why do you enjoy making jewellery - what motivates you?

Jewellery-making is a very satisfying craft. I come from a background of craftsmen; when I was a child my Father turned goblets and bowls from beautiful native NZ timber. Working with my hands comes naturally to me. I feel honoured to be able to contribute to peoples' celebratory times and privileged that I work in capturing memories of love and happy times - memories captured in timeless gifts.

You are known for the elegance of your work. How do you come up with your unique designs?

A piece of jewellery must be created like a wearable sculpture, beautiful from all directions. I have done much research into the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period of jewellery and also have a great love of fine architecture. I am inspired by the lines of villas and cathedrals as well as New Zealand's natural beauty. I always work to combine an elegance and timelessness with a fresh new appearance. I am continuously integrating the style preference of my client and sometimes a client will bring in a copy of a design as a start to the design conversation.

Typically, how long does it take to craft a piece?

Once the design consultation process is completed and the quote is accepted, one jewellery piece typically is made over the period of 4 weeks. Ordering the metal, sourcing the stones, having it set and getting it valued are also considerations. If the date for a special event has to be met, I will, at the onset of our communication, outline a feasible timeline.

What percentage of your customers would want engagement/wedding rings?

An average of 60% of my work is engagement and wedding rings for couples about to make this important commitment together. With the high integrity of our Gemstones and materials our jewellery is made to last, offering eternal beauty and satisfaction. We feel that this is what sets us apart from the shops.

Who are your other customers...what type of pieces do they most commonly ask for?

Jewellery Remodeling is very popular. Often a jewel that you have had for many years no longer suits your personal style today. I utilize the materials from one or many existing items, and redesign them into something new that suits who you are today. The variety of what I do is enormous and I've been asked to design and make just about anything that you can think of, never failing to satisfy.
